Many parents and professionals see food as something that children take for granted. I wish it were like that. Research shows that learning to eat is the most difficult human behavior we will ever perform in our lives. In this webinar Dr. Kay Toomey explains the complexity of nutrition from a multidisciplinary perspective. As a child psychologist, she has 35 years of experience working with babies and children with feeding problems. MinNultotVijf considers it an honor that this internationally renowned trailblazer in this field is providing this webinar.

Learning to eat is a much more complicated undertaking than it seems. This is mainly because all seven areas of human functioning are involved: organs, muscles, senses, learning ability, learning history, development, nutritional status and the environment in which you find yourself (the so-called Iceberg). Mastering eating first requires each of these seven areas to work correctly individually. In addition, a child must be able to make these aspects work together. Good coordination between the areas determines the ultimate success of our eating behavior.

From this perspective, Dr. Kay Toomey provides insight into the complexity associated with feeding infants and young children during this webinar. She explains normal critical versus problematic critical eating behavior. She then makes clear why a multidisciplinary approach is crucial to fully understand poor eating behavior. This insight provides opportunities to work with children to improve their eating development.

During the webinar, participants will be asked to perform two physical exercises to increase their understanding of the concepts discussed. Exercise 1 is a postural stability activity from a regular kitchen or office chair. Exercise 2 involves an oral motor activity using two medium-sized crackers. This combination of explanation and practice offers you the first hints at what you can do to improve the eating situations in your families.
